Not an Orca in Sight

On winter days without much wind, it’s lovely to mountain bike along the trails with views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Port Townsend Bay. The other day a woman told me orcas had been seen heading toward Port Townsend, and she pointed out the Admiralty Inlet where they were supposed to travel. I looked through my binoculars and hoped to see them, as we haven’t seen any since living here. Although orcas are often pictured in Washington tourist brochures, most pods live farther north, up in British Columbia. Today when my son and I rode  our mountain bikes through Fort Worden, we didn’t see orcas, whales, or even eagles. It was still a spectacular ride, and a great way to spend time together.
